Abstract Nowadays viscous dampers are used to prevent undesired vibrations in the machines. These passive elements, convert mechanical energy into heat energy by fluid motion and the heat is dissipated. It is possible that this energy can be regenerated by using a suitable electric machinery and power converter topology. By means of this electromagnetic system, the mechanical energy due to undesired vibrations can be converted into electrical energy and can be utilized later, In this study a slotted tubular electromagnetic magnetic damper was designed. The effect of winding slot width and permanent magnet width on the system performance is analyzed and optimized. For this purpose a two-dimensional parametric geometry of the system is created using MATLAB and COMSOL. Then two-dimensional axisymmetric Finite Element analysis is performed and the results are compared.
