Abstract In this study; the effect of the barriers (niches) that are placed around and on the radiator to heat the space was investigated. Radiator systems mostly used for heating the houses in Turkey. Position of the radiators in the space is preferred as far as possible in the bottom of the window. The aim is more rapid warming of the space by placing heater to the area which has highest heat loss and creating air circulation around the radiator. Placing the barriers around the radiators prevents or decelerates the heating of the space is a common opinion. In this study, two spaces were utilized which completely have same characteristics and conditions. This study consists of two different experiments. In the first experiment, the barrier was placed only above the radiator at the first space and around of the radiator was left open at the second space. In the second experiment, the barrier was placed around and above the radiator at the first space and around of the radiator was left open at the second space. Heat loss is investigated by measuring the energy expenditure of the spaces. Also the effect of the barriers to the space temperature was investigated by space temperature readings from the middle of the spaces. It is suggested that both the above and around niches radiator is a little more efficient than open radiator for space heating. It was determined that placing barriers on the radiator or surrounding the radiator with barriers in the space does not make negative effect on the contrary albeit makes small amount positive affect
