Abstract Biofuel production is increasing due to environmental advantages and reduces dependence on petroluem based diesel fuels. Biofuel is an alternative fuel source and main features were listed as; biodegradeble, sulphur-free, non-poisonous, consisting oxygen and high cetane values. Mediterranean region's of Turkey has high potential for production of cotton and olive oil are an alternative source for energy production. In this study, performance and emission characteristics of a four-stroke, one cylinder diesel engine operating with olive oil and cotton oil based biodiesel, and a combination of these mixtures were analyzed. In order to identify the performance and emission characteristics, the engine was tested with full load-varied speed tests. Experimental tests showed that increasing the proportion of the biodiesel in the mixture, with respect to petroleum based diesel fuel, increases the specific fuel consumption while causes a decrease in the engine’s torque. The emission analysis showed that the CO, HC and exhaust emission is increasing while NOx emissions are increased. Keywords: Biodiesel; Diesel engine; Exhaust emissions
