Abstract The concerns with some machinability aspects on tool wear in hard turning of AISI 4140 (52 ± 1 HRC) high strength low-alloy steel using PVD-TiN coated ceramic inserts under dry environment. The machined surface monitoring and cutting tool wear mechanism are investigated in this work. The experiments were conducted at two different cutting speeds (150, 180 m/min) with three different feed rates (0.04, 0.08 and 0.12 mm/rev) and a constant depth of cut (0.2 mm). The effects of cutting speed and feed rate on tool wear were investigated using an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The best tool wear resistance performance was achieved at cutting speeds (150 m/min) and feed rate (0.04 mm/rev) with lowest wear (0.07178 mm) Our results revealed that the feed rate is the most significant parameter influencing the tool wear.
