Abstract In this study, the effects of methanol fumigation on diesel engine performance parameters and emissions characteristics have been investigated, experimentally. Methanol was injected during the inlet period into the inlet manifold at different fuel consumption ratios (at 4%, 8%, and 12%, namely, M4, M8 and M12). With methanol fumigation, it is aimed to improve the naturally aspirated test engine volumetric efficiency, to increase combustion efficiency due to contribution of alcohol fuel of high oxygen content and to reduce NOx emissions depending on the reduction of the inlet temperature. Experimental studies were carried out under full load conditions at 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, 2200 and 2400 rpm engine speeds. After the experimental studies, the engine torque, effective power, effective efficiency and specific fuel consumption have been observed to be increasing with methanol fumigations for full load condition with respect to standard engine data. Also, becoming important for the diesel engine, NOx emissions were decreased significantly. Keywords : Methanol Fumigation, Diesel Engine, Engine Performance and Exhaust Emissions.
