Abstract Electromechanical products are such products that include digital cameras, electrical tooth-brushes and automotive central locking systems and robots, having more than one technology in them. Design of these products is very complex and time-consuming due to a lot of cross-disciplined constraints. Electromechanical system development cannot be divided in remote phases as parts and systems have to be designed together. Instead of integrated product designs single part designs are generally preferred on account of availability of wide variety of analysis and simulation tools. There is however a little support for designing complex systems and sub-systems in today's engineering environment. In this research work integration of mechanical and electronics product design have been proposed within a set of given constraints. The system has been developed by using Delphi based environment including a CAD system. Some industrial products such as an electrical toothbrush and a walking robot have been studied to identify part- relations and their side effects on each other affecting overall system performance. The system provides designers with understanding complex product development processes, and their constraints imposed on costs, weight and dimensions. It enables new and realistic approach for supporting the design process under several constraints from different engineering disciplines. Also, product key characteristics are identified and the proposed design is broken down into sub-systems and parts. Decisions made on designs are recorded in such a format that all parties involved can have an access to the system and understand the details and history of the design. In addition, the system serves to re-design and simplify existing products by taking re-use of components and sub-systems and new technology into account.
