Abstract In this paper, the microscopic morphology of a semi solid Al-4Zn-3Mg alloy by strain induced melt activated (SIMA) process were investigated, and the effects of predeformation, microstructural evolution and hardness changes were determined. The experimental results showed that the grain structure exhibited the diffrence from the edge to the center of the sample because of non-uniform predeformation and isothermal heat treatments reduced hardness of material.
