Abstract Due to the complex geometry of lifting hooks stress calculation of this members are obtains by different methods depending on different assumptions. The first of these methods is approximate calculation method. On this method the curvature of the hook is neglected and calculations are based on a straight beam with an eccentric load. It is obvious that this method does not allow us to converge to the correct maximum stress value precisely. The certain calculation of the stress values on the hook, could only obtained by paying attention to the curved geometric shape of the hook. These calculations could be done by application of the curved beam theory of Timoshenko on the hook and Bach approximation. On the other hand, application of the numerical methods for components with complex geometrical shapes as the lifting hook is also beneficial. One of these is Finite Element Method. In this study, approximate calculation method is given for the lifting hooks and certain calculation method is discussed by adopting Timoshenko’s curved beam theory and Bach approximation on the simple hook calculation. Finally finite element method is applied to obtain the stress field on the hook and this field is compared with photoelasticity experiments. As a result, different methods used to obtain the stress field on the hook are compared. And according to the results found, some recommendations are given for the lifting hook calculations on the field applications.
