Abstract The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of MoSi2 surface alloying, which was applied by TIG as a energy source, on microstructure and hardness. MoSi2 powders placed in a prepared cavities on the surface of the samples by the aid of suitable binder. MoSi2 was melted by using TIG welding machine. Surface of the cast iron was metallurgical re-alloyed and alloy layers were investigated on the base of microstructure and micro hardness. Important hardness increments were measured after surface alloying. It was concluded that, hardness increments were mainly due to the increase in the cementite because of high cooling rate of the surface and increase in the hardenability of metal with increase in the molybdenum element on the surface. In addition, possibility of molybdenum carbide formation was taken into account. High amount of carbide from free graphite and molybdenum from the decomposition of MoSi2 was the source of molybdenum carbide formations. It was observed that, it is possible to increase the surface hardness of the cast irons by this way and increase the service life of the parts. Keyword: Nodular Cast Iron, Tig Welding, Hardness.
