Abstract Materials properties can be significantly changed depending on heat treatment temperature and varying cooling rate. In this study, the effects of cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 1060 steels were investigated. Samples were heated and treated at 820°C and 950°C for 25 min and subsequently were cooled in three different (water, oil and air) methods. Also, stress relieving treatment at 600 °C was applied the specimens cooled in water. Changes in material structure were determined by Charpy impact test and micro hardness measurements. Inner structure images were obtained by optical microscope. Higher toughness at specimens of 820°C was obtained by cooling in water, oil and air respectively. Further increases in toughness were obtained by heat treatments applied afterwards. Key words: Heat Treatment, Hardness, Charpy Test, Microstructure
