Abstract Building of fishways is a legal obligation for providing fish migration over hydraulic structures such as dam, barrage. In this study, the recommended dimensions for pool and weir fishways are decreased by ½. The velocity within the fishways that is built in an open channel is measured by using ADV (AquisticDopplerVelocimeter). For a discharge value of Q=6.21l/s that is used in experiments, the difference between the height of the water surface of downward and upward side of the first four weir is found to be 1cm and 2cm for the last one.It is determined that the value of the horizontal velocities at the downward side of the orifices are increased and at the upward side of the other orifice is found to be decreased, and even negative velocities are occurred. Besides, at the downward side of the orifices the velocity along the y direction is found to be increased.
