Abstract Suture is a natural or synthetic medical materials used in order to hold body tissues together, control of bleeding after an injury or surgery. Sutures are classified into two main group absorbable and non-absorbable suture materials. Absorbable suture materials are made from natural (catgut and collagen) and synthetic medical materials (polyglycolic acid, polyglactin 910, polydioxanone, polyglyconate). Non-absorbable suture materials are natural (silk, cotton, flax) and synthetic (nylon, metals, dacron, polypropylene, isobutyl-cyanoacrylate, polybutester, PHDPE). In this study, definition of suture which has a history as old as humanity used in the treatment of wounds, historical development and varieties are investigated
