Abstract Variable valve timing has been used in today's engines with conventional camshaft mechanism. Valve lift and timing can be controlled by using variable valve mechanisms which minimize the decrease in performance resulting from the volumetric efficiency by maintaining the optimum charge velocity for operating conditions of engine. At the same time, mechanical systems for adjusting both the valve lift and the valve timing are still in use in today's engine technology. A linear volumetric efficiency curve is obtained between low and high speed of the engine by controlling the valve timing and lifting. The camless valve including electro-hydraulic, electro-pneumatic, electro-magnetic valve actuators has been under development for the future valve technology. In this study, the conventional valve mechanism, electro-mechanical, electro-hydraulic, electro-pneumatic and electro-magnetic valve actuators has been compared to each other.
